ABOUT ME

DORY DOYLE

BECOMING A HOLISTIC EDUCATOR & PRACTITIONER

In 2014, I was a new mom to twin infants, and although I had a mother's instinct, I kept ignoring it. When I had a question about a behavior and it was waved away by the doctor, I accepted that as truth. When he prescribed a steroid cream, I followed directions, which proceeded to bleach my entire infant son's skin (and who knows what damage was done underneath). When I was told that I could start solids at the age of 4 months old (even though with their preemie birthday, they were technically 3 month olds), I pulled out the baby food jars.

I saw effects. I noticed behaviors. I asked questions. And I was told to listen to the experts, even though my instincts told me otherwise.

With the health issues we ended up dealing with down the road, I should have followed my intuition.

Yet 2014 was also the year that a friend introduced me to essential oils. Though I was very hesitant to try them ("Plants instead of medicine? No thanks!"), eventually I didn't think it would do any harm.

That decision was my first "yes" that led to a series of "yes"es and even more "NO!"s that would change the course of our lives and hundreds of other families.

That yes to that bottle of lavender oil led me to some amazing holistic families who gave me the freedom to ask questions, taught me how to find out answers, and gave me the courage to continually grow in my knowledge, experience, and training.

  • I first learned an aromatherapy emotional release technique, created by a clinical psychologist, and I wrote several of the training manuals that we initially used for the modality.
  • I attended several mindfulness and yoga aromatherapy retreats.
  • I studied how chemical exposure and pharmaceuticals can create cascading health issues, an epidemic in its own. That pharmaceuticals and western medicine are best used to save a life as medical intervention. But the body wants to heal, and it does this best through homeostasis and without synthetic additives.
  • I knew that essential oils, herbs, and plants have such amazing G-d given features that I studied to be an aromatherapist, completing my training with The School of Aromatic Studies as a Certified Aromatherapist (NAHA) in 2020.
  • I continued to listen to gentle soul nudges and completed additional training with the Center for Aromatherapy Research and Education to learn additional aromatherapy techniques in late 2020.
  • As a way to further understand the role that energy works in the universe, I completed Reiki Level 1 & 2 training.
  • Following that, I completed additional coursework to be a Licensed Spiritual Health Coach in 2021.
  • After further intuitive guidance, I became a Certified Emotion Code practitioner in 2022 through Discover Healing.
  • In the winter of 2023, I took extensive coursework to be a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, specializing in muscle testing and root cause investigation.
  • I continued my energy work studies through various modalities, such as tuning forks, crystal singing bowls, chakras, crystals, and other frequency tools.
  • Continuing on with my energy work studies, I became a Usui Holy Fire III Reiki Master Practitioner in 2023.

Each of these YESes were not possible without the last. Every single one served a purpose and led to study with fascinating practitioners and gain wonderful insight. During that time, I have hosted 3 different podcasts, written 6 books, and built an expanding business. What started with a product line that I represented became the understanding that the work that I do goes far beyond any one company.

And all throughout, I was learning how to listen to my instinct. It became very powerful in my life, acting as an internal guidance system. But it is my belief that that this intuition doesn't come directly from me - it is far more spiritual than that.

Regardless of your personal religious of spiritual beliefs, I work with my clients at their comfort level to honor their own intuition, teaching them how to trust and build on that. As an Intuitive Health Coach, my goal is actually to put myself out of a job; eventually my clients have such strong intuition that they have full faith in their own abilities to decide the correct health path.

With a Bachelor of Science in Human Development from Virginia Tech (2007) and a Master of Education from the University of Virginia (2008), I have always had a fascination with understanding the stages of the human mind and body and how to help it function through teaching and lifelong learning.

When I was in college, and I was asked what I would be doing with my degree, I wasn't sure where I would end up. I just knew that I wanted to be a forever student. I loved the process of asking questions and combing through resources and experiential testimonials to come to conclusions. And then I loved the process of taking those conclusions and turning them on their head with more questions.

Science is the art of the scientific method and critical thinking. We as humans are always learning as we challenge what we once knew through the scientific method.

As an educator, I teach to all ages, from homeschooling my children, writing and teaching courses on holistic techniques, through the books I've written and podcasts I've created, and even in the corporate setting. I believe that we can take any experience and learn from it.

My philosophy for homeschooling is exactly how I had hoped to run my classroom when I taught kindergarten, 2nd, and 4th grades: experiential learning. I believe that our world is our classroom, and it is up to the adults (previously known as the teacher) to act as a guide. As the student has questions and passions, the guide may help lead him towards finding an answer, but the guide rarely teaches formal lessons.

We use a variety of texts for teaching, and we depend heavily on novels, non-fiction information books, encyclopedias, and field trips. We love geocaching, hiking, field guides, and learning history and geography from traveling. We have used a sequential math program (Right Start Math), but we cement our knowledge through telling time on our watches or buying our own toys at the store with our hard-earned money. We believe that it is more important to speak well to others (of all ages), and less of performing well on tests. We write short plays and take music lessons and swim and bike. We have a massive vocabulary because we talk with big words on purpose and explain them as needed.

If you had to know what "program" we use... we don't have any one program. Some call us "unschoolers," some say that we do project-based learning. I just say that we learn by living. As David says, "We are one of a kind."

In the spring of 2023, I began to help other home educating families in the state of Virginia by offering end-of-year Proof of Progress reports ("evaluations"). More on how those are offered...
