Music & Playlists

Music has a way of transforming an experience – both positively and negatively.

Theories Behind Frequencies

There’s actually a science behind it! If you look just purely at the vibrational tone of a note, it has a specific frequency that it vibrates. If you don’t believe me, think of a guitar string. You pluck it, and it vibrates. Pluck one of the other strings, and it will vibrate faster or slower. That is its frequency. You can see it in action!

You can also look at tuning forks, in which different shapes and sizes equate to different notes/tones/frequencies.

Our bodies and organs also vibrate at different frequencies. So do emotions inside our body. Sometimes when we are at ill-ease, our vibrations at specific areas/organs are off. They might be just a tad flat or sharp. Or they are really out of whack. But we can utilize our music toolbox to help! When we use music (or simplistically tuning forks or singing bowls) at different frequencies, our organs can rise/lower to their correct frequency. That is the idea behind resonance. The tuning fork will not change its tone, but if an organ is supposed to be functioning at that frequency, it will correct itself to match – gently nudging it in the right direction.

The good news is that our bodies can’t be nudged in the wrong direction through resonance. So there can be no problems or ill-effects with using resonance to encourage healing. If you pick the wrong frequency, the worst that can happen is… nothing!

The Argument for Correct Words (Affirmations)

There’s a reason why I don’t love popular music – words matter!

If you listen (and sing along) to music that has words about how sad life is – your brain doesn’t realize that it’s someone else’s words. It takes that on as truth!

So why feed junk food to our brain when we could nourish it with nutritious, meaningful, rich possibilities?

This is why I love positive music with good, hopeful words.

My Session Playlist

In most of my treatment sessions, I have a playlist of wordless songs. I love them – they are gentle, peaceful, and chosen with purpose.

Yet I’ve found that for my Spinal Flow sessions, having wordless songs just doesn’t work. I realized this during my own first SF session, when my practitioner used several of the songs that I now used. I found myself first rolling my eyes at the words. Then I found that I was in a much deeper meditative space because of them. Then, when one of the songs came on, singing of releasing, I actually felt the spinal wave for the first time! That was when I knew that these would be my songs for my own Spinal Flow sessions!
